'Codes and Conventions' of reality TV The conventions of reality television dramas are typical features, characters and structures that you would expect in a reality TV drama. The codes are technical, character, narrative and cultural codes. Reality is hard to define as it is a hybrid genre that is continually developing from its highly constructed situations to its very structured scenarios, heavily edited to provide audience entertainment. The codes and conventions help the audience relate and observe to how other people live as they want to see a transformation through character and narrative codes. For example reality shows like 'Educating Yorkshire' have multi-stranded narratives of character development, so you can see a character grow. The use of technical codes like editing techniques and camera shots help the audience understand the narrative and character codes.
